Gorillas Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

0330 – 0400 hrs: Wake Up Call
0400 hrs: Depart Kigali with parked Breakfast and drive to Ruhengeri - 3 hrs. 
0640 hrs: (approx) arrival at the Volcanoes National Park HQs
0700 hrs: Registration is a simple process where the park staff determines which group of gorillas you will visit. The park staff assesses your fitness level and advises you of the trekking times and conditions to the various groups based upon their location in the park the previous evening. There are a total of 80 gorilla permits available each day with a maximum of eight trekkers visiting any one group. Porters may be hired for the trek to carry your backpack and gear. US$10 per person/per day. We advise that you utilize this service. Treks vary in duration depending on which gorilla group you are assigned to. After locating your assigned gorilla group, you will spend approximately one hour in their company before heading back down the volcano slopes. 
After the trek, rejoin your driver at the trail head

Lunch at a local restaurant on own arrangements. 

Depart from foothills of the Virunga volcanoes and drive south through a scenic drive to Kigali past coffee, tea and banana plantations. Everything and everywhere, sheer green and hanging on the hills; Rwanda truly - land of a thousand fertile green hills. (2.5 hrs) 
Approx. 1400 – 1500 hrs - Drive back to Kigali – (approx. 2.5 -3 hrs.) / Depart.

Gorillas Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
With Overnight - Ruhengeri

Day 1
Afternoon depart on scenic drive Northwest wards through the beautiful terraced hillsides that 
display Rwanda’s landscape (approx. 2.5 - 03 hrs). 
Arrive at Ruhengeri, the base for Gorilla trekking at the Parc National des Volcans. The town 
itself, located only 25km from Uganda boarder, is relatively a small city of about 70,000 people. The constant flow of humanity is quite remarkable. The Town has great views of the surrounding volcanoes. People are very friendly here and although a former Belgian colony (and thus French-speaking), many people speak English here. 
Overnight: At a lodge in Ruhengeri. (Full Board)

Day 2
0530 – 0600: Wake Up Call
0630: Transfer to the Volcanoes National Park offices
0700: Registration where the park staff determines which group of gorillas you will visit, as well as your fitness level and advises you of the trekking times and conditions to the various groups based upon their location in the park the previous evening. Once the trekkers are put into groups, each group’s Lead Guide briefs the trekkers of the trekking procedures as well as the “do’s and don’ts” while in the presence of gorillas, you will then rejoin your driver/guide and head to the trekking point. 
Porters may be hired for the trek to carry your backpack and gear; Cost, US$10 per person/per day. We advise that you utilize this service. Trekking can take from two to six or more hours if the gorillas move before the park rangers locate them the next morning.  The guides stop frequently to allow trekkers a chance to rest and take photos along the way. After the trek, meet up with your guide and transfer back to your lodge for lunch.

a) ESSENTIALS FOR THE HIKE

  • Long pants (jeans/khakis) and a long sleeved shirt
  • Good well-worn hiking boots
  • Light raincoat
  • Leather gloves (there are stinging nettles in the park)
  • Cap/Hat
  • Camera (no flash)/ personal camcorder
  • Plenty of drinking water
  • Basic first Aid Kit
  • Med Plaster

b) Gorilla Guide Lines

  • Once inside the forest, the following must be observed:-
  • No spitting in the park
  • No littering in the park
  • No coughing in the direction of the gorillas
  • Only speak in whispers
  • Do not point at the gorillas
  • Movements around the gorillas must be unthreatening
  • No venturing behind thick shrubs. You may surprise a gorilla.
  • If a nettle stings you, do not cry out, scream, shout-out loud or make any sudden moves.
  • If a gorilla charges or vocalizes, do not look directly at it. Stand perfectly still unless the guide ask
  • you to crouch or move back.
  • Keep a minimum distance of 7 meters from the Gorillas.
